Christoph Silber, leading German screenwriter at August meeting of 2008-08-03 Sunday
From Don's e-mail "donjtingle@aol.com show details 5:53 PM (17 hours ago) Reply
Hello Film Co-op Monthly Workshop participants and friends of the North Alabama Filmmakers Co-op.
I am sending this e-mail to the entire Film Co-op mailing list plus a few friends who may be interested.
Our monthly workshop meets the First Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 pm in my space at the Flying Monkey Arts Center (except for holidays or when I have to be out of town - then we delay till the second Sunday of the month). The workshop content varies from month to month - sometimes we have hands-on hardware demonstrations, sometimes we discuss film making techniques, sometimes we review and discuss works in progress and sometimes we are fortunate to have a guest come to talk to us.
We have some business to take care of at this months meeting - our annual "Rocket City Short Film Festival" is coming up in October and other upcoming activities.
But we also have a special guest coming to talk about his career in film. Christoph Silber - Considered one of the leading German screenwriters, Chris has written and co-written several feature films, including GOOD BYE LENIN and ARRANGED. His work for television spans sitcom headwriting, BBC docudrama and critically acclaimed episodes for Germany’s leading feature-length crime series TATORT. He has held workshops on writing and visual storytelling and is a member of the German Film Academy. His directing debut, the short ICEWIND, was selected for several US festivals. His next premiere is NORTH FACE, a European period drama opening at Locarno this summer.
Here's a summary of his career at imdb:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1557910/
Come early and bring something cold to drink (I already requested that the air condintioning be turned on for the meeting - but you know how hot it can get at this time of year!) We'll meet in Film Co-op President Anna Sue's space (Squeaking Tribe Puppets - directly accross from my space, 2nd floor near the theater) for this meeting so we can accommodate a larger crowd.
Regular workshop attendees: If you have samples of on-going projects you'd like to review, we can continue after the discussion with Chris.
Please join us for this unique opportunity - brought to you by your local Alabama Filmmaker's Co-op, now in our 31st year as an all volunteer community service organization fostering the love of cinema and independent film production and presentation in North Alabama.

monthly workshop meeting is next Sunday, June 3rd from 2 to 4pm.
"Hello Film Co-op workshop participants,
This is to remind you that our monthly workshop meeting is next Sunday, June 3rd from 2 to 4pm.
The focus of this months workshop -
1) Script format and structure: I'll bring the material that I've gather from doing the summer workshop program, along with some reference materials. We're still planning on having Gena Ellis come to our workshop later in the summer (probably August) to discuss her scripting writing successes (She won best in show for Angela's Decision at the Tupelo Film Festival). But this month we'll focus on mechanics of the screenplay.
2) Uploading videos to YouTube or other on-line sites. A few members of our groups have experience and will discuss things like formats, image size, etc. If any of you have some videos on-line, come discuss the process to help others do so.
3) Rocket City Short FIlm Festival. The date is Oct 20. Submissions are due by Oct.1. We're assembling the submission form, etc. What can we do to improve or expand on the festival?
4) MovieMakers: A Filmmaking Workshop for Kids. I'll be running the workshop again this July - on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. A couple of our workshop participants have already volunteered to help. We'll discuss current plans.
We'll meet in either my or Anna Sue's space Upstairs at the Flying Monkey Arts Center from 2 to 4pm.
See you there,
Don"

The wiki, http://filmcoop.schtuff.com is migrating to pbwiki. They had a lot more space and free zip backups, things which costs more money than we can spend at present monthly at pbwiki. But the free account is pretty darn good now that I've had some time to play with it.
It only has 10Mb, but after playing around with my own pbwiki, http://cainmark.pbwiki.com , I've found a way to use offsite links to my works in conjunction with my freemind created html files. Since we'rre mostly going ot have outlinkks to members of the workshops own pages and works, this should suit us well. Take a look at it, and change what you feel you should and/or can on the filmcoop workshop wiki.
This is now the wiki page.
http://filmcoopworkshop.pbwiki.com/
The password is: alabama
With that you can change anything about the page. You do NOT have to be a pbwiki user with a pbwikiIdentity. You just have to know the password.
Lewis, could you please change the website about the workshop to "wiki" instead of "blog" and with the above information?
Thanks.

interview shooting techniques for documentary filmmaking.
from Don's e-mail
"Next Sunday, April 1 at 2pm, the workshop group will meet at the Flying Monkey to discuss and work on interview shooting techniques for documentary filmmaking. I have a few lights and just got a really nice tripod. I'll bring those. Bring your camera and tripod. Also bring any documentary interview samples you may have on DVD - either one's you have made or just ones you like. We'll see if we can figure out what it takes to get similar effects. This is not a lecture - but a hands on chance to experiment. If you have any lighting equipment that you'd like to add to the mix, bring that too. If you don't have equipment, come anyway and take notes or even still images.
We'll also work on some initial planning for our Rocket City Short Film Festival, discuss future activities, etc. I'll also report on my kids moviemaking workshops at Gadsden and UNA and well start discussing this summer's workshop coming up in July.
There will be a group showing a film at the Flying Monkey on Sunday afternoon - I assume they'll be set up downstairs, so we'll most likely meet upstairs. I don't know the status of the move upstairs, but I assume its proceeding smoothly.
Just a reminder, the worshop group is open to all as a community service of the Alabama Filmmaker's Co-op. Guests, friends, even relatives are invited to participate. If any one wishes to join the Film Co-op, we welcome and encourage you to do so. The co-op is an all volunteer organization with the goal of fostering movie making in the local community, showing independant and documentary films and providing a forum for movie fans to share their enthusiasm for the artistic medium.
Please forward this e-mail to anyone you think may be interested.
See you there, Sunday from 2 to 4 pm at the Flying Monkey.

next meeting of the Film Co-op workshop will be April 1 from 2 to 4pm at the Flying Monkey Arts Cent
"Hello all,
The next meeting of the Film Co-op workshop will be April 1 from 2 to 4pm at the Flying Monkey Arts Center. The subject for this month is: how to shoot interviews for documentary filmmakers. This is a participant lead discussion and demonstration so bring along any equipment and ideas or source material, even examples from documentaries. We will have some new participants who have asked about this topic.
We'll also discuss plannning for the Rocket City Short Movie Marathon which will be next October, but we'll need to get application material and guidelines for submission ready and on the web site soon.
I'll also want to discuss this summer's "MovieMakers: A Filmmaking Workshop for Kids" to see if you guys can help planning and implementation of the workshop. I will be conducting a movie making workshop for Teens in Gadsden on Saturday March 31 and will report on that as well.
I'm still working to get a schedule for Gena Ellis to appear. As most of you know, Gena has a number of screenplays optioned in Hollywood and had an Australian director purchase the script for Angela's Decision. That movie is making the film festival circuit now and won an honorable mention at the UNA Film festival. Gena has plans to conduct a screen writing workshop but has been so busy with the festivals that she hasn't been able to pin down a date/time. After that workshop, she will come visit with our group and discuss her experiences in the film biz.
The Flying Monkey is still in the process of transitioning to the upstairs. There is a function on the first floor - the local Democratic Women's group is hosting a showing of Hotel Rawanda from 3 to 5pm. So most likely we'll be meeting upstairs in either Anna Sue's work area or near the end of that wing in the stage/movie area.
Again the meeting is Sunday April 1 from 2 to 4pm. I'll look forward to seeing you there. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Request for help videotaping an upcoming event. Neither Don nor Jim can make this one.
Hello Film Co-op members and workshop participants,
Linda Haynes has asked if anyone could volunteer to videotape the event shown (on April 13th) below and make DVDs for purchase. I am not available to support this event.
I did this last year for the Amy Goodman appearance. The DVDs sold for $10 each and I believe they had a couple dozen ordered. By the time you make the DVDs, get cases, mailers and postage, it pretty much pays for itself.
If anyone is interested and has the time and equipment please let me know, (or contact Linda directly)
- Original Message - From: Linda Haynes To: Sterling Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2007 12:18 AM Subject: Sponsor UAH event on media reform -- Jeff Cohen, author, lecturer and media critic
Hi Sterling,
As you know from our prior conversations on needing a location for this ... the local media reform organization is bringing in a great speaker to talk about media issues. We would love to involve the UAH Charger Democrats (is that the correct name now?)! Here's the scoop ...
The North Alabama Media Reform group is excited to bring author and lecturer Jeff Cohen to Huntsville! We've just scheduled this for the evening of Friday, April 13 at Roberts Hall on the UAH campus.
Jeff is a dynamic speaker and his topic -- "My Misadventures in Corporate Media" -- is fascinating. He describes his experiences with three well-known news outlets (CNN, MSNBC, Fox News) that, frankly, are letting Americans down. They ignore many important issues, don't investigate the facts, and frequently air "fluff" stories to fill their time. Jeff has some great stories to tell! After his presentation, we'll also hold a book signing for his latest book.
See below for more information about this impressive media critic and media reform trailblazer.
We plan to make this event FREE to the public -- so we need your help as a sponsor! All sponsors will have their name in our posters, press releases and website. They may also want to set up an information table at this event.
I look forward to hearing that your group will be a sponsor. We are asking groups to donate $100 or $50. If you're not able to donate at this time, an endorsement would also be great. We just ask that you help promote the event to your members.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience -- since we will need the sponsor/endorser names for our press releases and event posters. We need to know no later than March 10 -- but sooner is even better. :-)
Thanks, Sterling!
peace, Linda Haynes North Alabama Media Reform http://www.northalabamamediareform.org/ 256-489-3884 lahaynes@knology.net
Jeff Cohen is a well-known writer, lecturer and media critic who founded the media watch group, FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) in 1986.
He is author and co-author of five books. His newest book, “Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media,” was published in 2006. This book dissects the cable news channels and finds serious failures in how they cover the most urgent issues of the day. Jeff has the personal experience to tell us what it's like. He was a senior producer on "Donahue" and on-air commentator at MSNBC in 2002-2003; a weekly "News Watch" panelist on Fox News Channel from 1997-2002; and a co-host of CNN's "Crossfire" in 1996. He has been quoted on issues of media and politics in such publications as the New York Times, Washington Post and TV Guide, and his columns have appeared in such dailies as USA Today, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe and Miami Herald. For four years, he co-wrote the weekly, nationally syndicated Media Beat column with Norman Soloman for Creators Syndicate. Cohen's prior books include Wizards of Media Oz: Behind the Curtain of Mainstream News (1997); Through the Media Looking Glass: Decoding Bias and Blather in the News (1995); The Way Things Aren't: Rush Limbaugh's Reign of Error (1995); and Adventures in Medialand: Behind the News, Beyond the Pundits (1993). Prior to launching FAIR in 1986, Cohen worked in Los Angeles as a journalist, and as a lawyer for the ACLU. His investigative articles ran in Rolling Stone, New Times, Mother Jones and other publications. He was a boardmember of several public interest groups, including the ACLU of Southern California and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference/L.A. Cohen did undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and did his legal studies at the Peoples College of Law in Los Angeles. He became a member of the California Bar in 1981. More information is available on his website www.jeffcohen.org which includes many of his articles and interviews.

from the e-mail
Sunday, Mar. 4 @ 2 PM -- Monthly filmmakers workshop This month's workshop will focus on "Coverage." The movie industry uses this word to summarize a standard way to capture a scene using shot formats that include Master, Two Shot, OTS, Close-ups, Reaction Shots, and Cutaways. We'll define each shot, set up examples using "audience volunteers", and then look at how to assemble a scene using these shots. If you have a good example from a film, bring it along and share with the group.
As always, participants are invited to bring along samples of works in process (up to 10 minutes on DVD) for feedback from the participants. The workshop is open to all, with a goal to encourage expanded participation in the Film Co-op and the local filmmaking community. Flying Monkey Arts Center, 2211 Seminole Dr., Huntsville.

Wiki for the Alabama Filmmaker's Workshop created
At our last meeting, I explained how the upgrade on Blogger basically froze others besides me from entering. I'd long thought a wiki would be a good way to go for the workshop aspect.
I experimented with several. (I really like pb wiki http://www.pbwiki.com but it had only 10 meg of space. fine for personal stuff, but I think we'll have used more than that by a couple of years.)
After learning what I could about them, this site seemed to be the best compromise:
http://filmcoop.schtuff.com/
The rules are the same as here, it's just at schtuff instead of blogspot now:
http://www.filmcoop.org/filmmakers.html#blog
I picked schtuff since it has blog features as well as wiki features, and tagging.

Notes From JIM:
I messed up the Blogger blog when it went to Blogger 2.0 so that no one but me can post to it. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix that.
The Livejournal community can be posted into by anybody with a livejournal account, I think. Don't know if you have to belong to that community or not to post. seamusmoon is the maintainer, so you might want to ask him.
The filmcoop website at http://www.filmcoop.org hasn't been updated since Novemeber. I know feuerkugel was supposed to be maintainging and updating that, and I know Linda tried to contact him about it.
A wiki may be the best way to go so that everyone can colloborate without worryign about problems with blogs or e-mails. Just a suggestion since I'm not really that responsible for much of this anymore.
I haven't been since the film coop moved upstairs, but I'm sure someone (or good signage) can tell everyone where to go.

Saturday, Jan. 27 -- Sierra Club Film Festival
From the film co-op e-mail. Cross-posting encouraged
Saturday, Jan. 27 -- Sierra Club Film Festival. The festival will start at 4, with the last movie starting around 9. It will be broken up into three parts: the 4 o'clock, the 7 o'clock, and the 9 o'clock.
The 4 o'clock showings: 'French Fries to Go'. An award winning film by Howard Donner (Telluride Mountain Film Festival and Mountain Film's "Best Environmental Film Award") telling the story of Charris Ford, "The Granola Ayatolla of Canola." This humorous yet educational film shows Ford as he travels and educates folks about biodiesel in his truck that runs on recycled french fry grease. (grassolean.com)
'The Vineyard Energy Project'. Tells of one island community's (Martha's Vineyard) use of solar power. (vineyardenergyproject.org)
'Storm in the Gulf'. When this episode of The Sierra Club Chronicles was being filmed, Hurricane Katrina was days away from hitting the Gulf Coast. The episode focuses on the folks who oppose drilling in Gulf Islands National Seashore. An eclectic group of people speak out to expose and shame the Governor (Haley Barbour) for paving the way for oil and natural gas companies. In addition to these movies, the audience will also be treated to cartoons by Mark Fiore. These cartoons will be shown between movies at the 4 o'clock showing as well as the 7.
